Freedom From Debt,
There are many who are struggling right now, trying to save as much funds as they can, or simply trying to make ends meet.
Sometimes we need things that are pricey, especially if we need more than one. You could save up for such things (instead of charging), yet in today's uncertain times that is not always easy to do.
Even if you are doing alright financially, everyone needs to learn to save and cut costs wherever they can responsibly. If you are lucky today, see what is going on around you and learn from what you witness. Saving money today, in even small ways, can help you during uncertain times in the coming future.
There is this person we know, who is reorganizing and cleaning out unnecessary clutter. This person needed shelving, yet the price for the number of shelves needed was expensive.
That was when DIY thinking saved the day.
If you're clever about how you DIY your project, DIY projects can help save you money. Sit down and write down what you need, and what the estimated cost to buy that (or those) item'(s) at the store. Afterward, write down alternative ways to make what you need (by DIY). Once you decide on how you want to make your project, calculate the cost of materials to complete your DIY project. It may take different ideas for your project to find the perfect alternative for your needs that fits within your price budget.
The person we know who needed shelving went through several different ideas on paper before she recalled her college days and the first shelving unit she purchased for herself. Scroll down to see some photos of how the project turned out and some information on how it was put together.

For less than the price of one small shelve, this shelving unit (below) gave more space than three standalone shelves. Real wood was used for the eight foot by twelve inch boards (the shelves). Plastic bags and paper towels were used to protect the floor from the bottom legs (which are cinder blocks).
Please Note: This shelving unit is not a great idea if you have children around.
If you consider these kind of shelving for yourself, keep in mind that they are heavy (the cinder blocks). They are probably not a good idea if you live in an apartment on the second floor, or for any room on the second (or more) floor. You also need to consider your foundation. Try to place where you know the foundation is stronger, like against a wall that is an exterior on the other side instead of against a wall that simply divides interior rooms. Also, do not make this shelving unit too tall. Those cinder blocks are heavy, and you don't want them to one day come crashing down.
