Some tips that you may want to consider if you choose to eat organics
There are many chefs (professional and personal) who are looking for healthy alternatives for their recipes ingredients.
But what defines healthy?
That is a question every cook should ask themselves.
The answer to this question is not a simple one to understand. To grasp the truth will take months, or even years of personal research.
It may seem as easy as searching online for a couple of hours, or as simple as posting the question on a community forum. But this kind of investigation may only lead to half truths.
Researching is key, and the answers are for each cook to decide for themselves.
The Vision Ministers of, A Cup Of Coffee With God Vision Ministry has chosen to eat/drink Organics. We have made this choice because of personal life experiences, allergies, and research.
We also feel that going organic helps save God's land for our future children. Going organic does not have to mean a big expense if you shop around. Perhaps price check online before you go out and buy. We learned not to over buy because of there not being preservatives, which means that dates are not prolonged on most organic foods. We therefore buy less each time we shop.
We want food that is NOT exposed to pesticides, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides, grown on raw sewage, chemicals, fed antibiotics, fed or was itself genetically modified. We don't want experiments for our food. We want food that was raised, grown, and treated with respect. The list goes on.
The choice to eat organics is for each person to decide for themselves and/or their family members.
Research, research, and research some more.
If you have decided to eat/drink organics, here are some tips to keep in mind while grocery shopping. What follows are based off our personal experiences and research. What is written in this post can change with time, or be debated otherwise. As suggested above, you will need to research, research, and research some more.
1> The cautious list may seem endless when trying to shop for healthy foods. Sometimes when you believe you've covered every aspect and know every detail, some new piece of information surprises you and changes your shopping patterns over and again.
2> Keep in mind that you may have to try and try again untill you find what you like in organics.
3> When you are shopping for organics, beware of words such as, "Original." I cannot say how many times my family has returned home from the grocery store and discovered that the bag of organic tortilla chips, was really a bag of original style tortilla chips. Or, the organic orange juice was actually a bottle of original orange juice.
4> Always read ingredients, not just the first time you buy a new food, but every time you buy the same food. It seems that every time I go shopping, some of my favorite organic foods have lost their organic. Or, the ingredients have been changed to something someone in my family is allergic to.
5> When organic shopping, beware of only one or so ingredients in a food being organic while every other ingredient is not.
6> Double and triple check food that boost, "healthy." Such foods could indeed be healthy. Yet, sometimes this is to lure an uninformed shopper to buy. You must decide what is healthy, then make sure any food you buy fit your healthy choices.
7> If you are shopping for organics, you may find yourself questioning food that chooses the word, "natural," or "real," without the word organic. These foods could be natural and completely real. Yet, these days, you may find that the definition of natural and/or real seems murky.
8> There are many labels that are nice to see on food. Research these labels. Some are better or best when coupled or grouped. We try to buy the labels that are protected by laws and/or regulations, such as organics.
9> Remember that Organics is not a diet in the sense of a weight lost program. Organics represents the quality of food. Those choosing to eat Organics, need to consider the choice as a new healthy choice.
While sometimes it may feel like a game, it all comes down to learning and understanding that healthy is defined by the choices you make based on the information you've researched.
It has been reported that cooking at home can be more healthy.
